Dharamsala, popularly known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’, is divided
into lower and upper towns with a difference of 457m(1500ft.)
between them. The mountains enfold 3 sides of the town and the
valley stretches to the south. Dharamsala is known for its scenic
beauty, calmness and serenity. It has high
pine trees, tea gardens
and timber yielding trees.
Dharamsala is now the seat of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. After
the
Chinese conquest of his country, Dharamsala is evocative of the
imperial days in places like Mcleod Ganj and Forsythe Ganj.
Dharamsala is the headquarters of the Kangra district. It became the
capital in 1852 and is 125 years old.
Dharamshala is a place for relaxation, a pace to unwind yourself.
But for the adventurous souls, this place does have spectacular and
challenging treks from McLeodganj. This 12 km climb to Triunda at a
height of 2800 meters will bring you to a level clearing and an icy
pond, the likes of which you will not find elsewhere. In addition,
there are several treks available to the peaks and the lofty
mountains of Dhauladhar. 3065 meters from the Upper Dharamshala is
the Lake Kareri. Nurpur - famous for an old fort and a temple of
Brijraj. In Masrui you will find large monolithic temple, similar to
the temples of Ellora.
Places for Sightseeing
BHAGSU NATH SHIV TEMPLE:
The old temple of Bhagsunath has a fresh water spring and a half km
is a beautiful water fall where melted snow from Dhauladhar ranges
from a beautiful cascade and turns into a clear water stream.
MCLEODGANJ:
At a 1 km also known as little Lhasa in India and a residence of his
Holiness Dalai lama of Tibet. The Tibetan Government-in-exile has
been here for over three decades. The impressive monastery has
larger than life images of the Buddha, padmasambhava and
Avaloktwshwara.
ST.JOHN’S CHURCH:
2.5 km from Hotel, between forsythganj and Mcleodganj is the
charming dressed –stone church of ST.John in the wilderness. under
the shade of deodar branches, a memorial has been erected over the
body of the British viceroy, Lord Elgin who died at Dharamshala in
1863. there is a well tended old graveyard on these grassy slopes.
DHARAMKOT:
3 km from Hotel situated on the crest of hill affords a panoramic
view of Kangra Valley, Pong Dam and Dhauladhar ranges.
DAL LAKE:
4.5 km from Hotel, A scenic picnic sport surrounded by forests of
deodar. Annual fair is held here every September.
NADDI:
6.5 km from Hotel and 2 km after Dal Lake is scenic sport Naddi
representing view of kangra Valley and Dhauladhar ranges.
KARERI:
13 km trek, passing through Dal Lake,Satobari and Ghera lead to
Kareri Lake(3200m) having beautiful high altitude meados,extensive
pasture lands and undulating slopes carpeted with patch work of
green floral patterns.
TRIUND:
14 km (2975m) a gradual trek which passes through dharamkot and
Rakkar Villages. Triund is a popular picnic and trekking sport at
the feet of perpetually snow clad Dhauladhar range. The snow line
starts at Illaqua (3350m) 5 km after triund.
KUNAL PATHARI:
A3 km drive from kotwali bazaar leads up to this rock temple
dedicated to local Goddess. The road passes through picturesque
forest and Tea Gardens.
WAR MEMORIAL:
14 km, land scaped lawn and a web of narrow paths fill a pine grove
where a monument has raised to commemorate the post Independence War
Heroes of Himachal.
CHINMAYA TAPOVAN TRUST:
18 km from Hotel, it is a tranquil Ashram Complex founded in 1978 by
the great exponent of Gita-Swami Chinmaya Nanda the complex includes
a 9 meter high image of lord hanuman,a magnificent Rama Temple, a
meditation hall, a school and a health and recreational center.
CHAMUNDA DEVI:
25 km the famous shrine of Chamunda Devi-the Slayer of Chand and
Mund.The Goddess is said to grant boons requested of her. At the
back of Temple is a cave like scoop where a stone “Lingam” under a
boulder.
